Shane has a long history in commercial aviation and associated operations. In 2015 he founded Metolius Aviation Capital to focus on the acquisition of wide body engines and has developed a key relationship with GE for the purchase of their engines.

Background

From 1982 through 1998 he flew as a captain for Air Berlin, and was current on the Boeing 737NG through 2012. In addition he was directly involved several major commercial events including re-flagging of the airline and later its sale of shares to Etihad.

After Air Berlin Shane worked for Pembroke Capital (now Standard Chartered) in Dublin where he gained experience in aircraft leasing and financing. He left Pembroke to found Avexus, an aviation software company that was later sold to Infospectrum.

From 2002 Shane worked independently in aircraft asset management and trading, with the bulk of the activity coming from the large Air Berlin fleet which was a result of the airlines acquisitions. He built the key relationships with Chinese banks ICBC and Minsheng for Air Berlin to sell and finance over 50 aircraft over the next 15 years.

Shane began investing in engines as well to broaden his base, and in response to the competition in the narrow body aircraft leasing industry. Initially focused on narrow body engines, he began to look at the wide body sector where the values are greater and there is relatively limited competition.

Other Achievements

In addition to his operational activities Shane also has an adventurous side. His enthusiasm for aviation led to his leading two Siberian Arctic flight Expeditions (1994-95) and two North Pole flights (1997-98). His plane, an Antonov AN-2 biplane, that he used is now in the Boeing Museum of flight. The Expeditions were in collaboration with well-known companies – including WIRED, Discovery, Magnavox, Apple, Boeing, Rolex, The Smithsonian Institution and National Geographic Television.

Education

Shane attended the University of San Diego and received a degree in economics and history in 1984. Concurrently he attended National Air College and obtained his Commercial Pilot License, Instrument Rating, Multi-Engine Rating and Instructors Flight Rating. In 1982, at 21 years of age, Shane was the youngest person to have flown 737 commercially.
